Choosing a Pest Control Tech App: What to Check Before You Switch
Choosing a tech app is choosing how your technicians will spend every day. A demo that looks good on a laptop in the office can feel very different on a phone in a hot back yard with gloves on. The best way to choose is to check the things that matter at the stop, not the things that look impressive on a feature list.
Start With the Rollout in Mind
How to roll out a tech app is covered in Mistakes Pest Control Companies Make Rolling Out a Tech App. Choosing well makes the rollout easier, so keep it in mind while you compare.
There are broadly three options: the big pest-control platforms built for large branch operations, generic field-service software built for every trade, and spreadsheets and paper. Each has a place. For an owner running one truck or a handful, the question is which one fits how a small pest control company actually works.
Check 1: What the Technician Sees at the Stop
Open the app on a phone and look at a stop card. Ask:
- Are stops in the route order the office set?
- Is there one-tap navigation?
- Do access notes, service notes and past visit notes show on the card?
- Is it clear what service is on the stop: quarterly, mosquito, rodent, one-time?
- Are there clear buttons to start, skip with a reason and complete?
Generic field-service apps often give a job an address and a notes box. That is not enough for pest control, where history and access matter at every stop.
Check 2: How Application Records Are Captured
This is the check that separates pest control software from everything else. Ask:
- Does the technician record what was applied at completion, on the phone?
- Can you build product mixes with rates per gallon, so technicians pick a mix instead of listing products?
- Does the record carry products, active ingredients, EPA reg. no., rates, amounts, area treated, target pest, site, equipment, technician license, wind, temperature, re-entry interval and drift-prevention notes?
- Is there a way to see completed treatments still missing a record?
- Can you pull chemical reports for any date range?
Be wary of any app that claims to make you “compliant.” Software helps you keep the records many states require. Your state lead agency sets the rules, and the label is the law. In PestBossPro, all of the above is part of the tech app and the office, as covered in Recording What Was Applied When the Pest Control Tech Completes a Treatment.
Check 3: The Customer Side
Your customers see the tech app through the messages it sends. Check:
- Are on-the-way and arrived texts automatic?
- Can customers choose their alerts: night before, when they're next, when the technician arrives?
- Do replies go to the office, not the technician's phone?
- Is there a customer app with the day's route, invoices, online payment and card updates?
- Can post-treatment instruction emails go out automatically?
- Is texting included, and how much? PestBossPro plans include 500, 1,000 or 2,000 segments a month, sent and received.
Check 4: Billing at Completion
Ask what happens when the technician taps Complete. Is the invoice created from the job? Can the card on file be charged right then? Can commercial accounts get one monthly statement covering every location? Are prepayments for programs like a mosquito season handled? If billing still means retyping tickets on Friday, the app is only doing half the job.
Check 5: Phones, Signal and the Small Stuff
Practical questions that matter more than they seem:
- Phones. Does it work on both iPhone and Android? Does it need an app store download, or can it install from the browser?
- Sign-in. Does each technician have their own login or PIN, so records and hours belong to the right person?
- Signal. Ask honestly what happens without a connection. PestBossPro needs one; a vendor that will not give you a straight answer is a warning sign.
- Time clock and GPS. Are they on the same phone, or separate tools?
Check 6: Price and the Trial
Look at the full price, not the starting price. Ask whether the tech app costs extra per technician, whether texting is included, and whether you pay for setup. PestBossPro is $59, $89 or $199 per month for Start, Pro and Crew, with the tech app on every plan.
Then use the trial on real work. PestBossPro has a 14-day free trial with no credit card. Set up your products and a mix, add a handful of real accounts, and run your own truck on it for a week. Nothing tells you more about a tech app than a real Tuesday.
Choose for the Stop, Not the Demo
The right tech app is the one your technicians will actually use at every stop, that captures the records you need, and that gets you paid when the work is done. Check those things on a real phone, on a real route, before you switch. To see how PestBossPro handles each one, visit the PestBossPro pest control app page.
