Selling the Quarterly Pest Plan at the End of the First Visit
The end of the first visit is the moment. The technician is in the driveway, the customer is standing at the door, and the problem that made them call is already being handled. Nobody will ever be in a better position to offer the plan. Most technicians are not salespeople, though, and they do not need to be. They need a short, honest routine they can repeat every time.
Why the Driveway Beats the Phone
As covered in Turning an Initial Pest Service Into a Quarterly Customer, the initial service is where most plan customers come from. The office can follow up later, but a phone call or an email is never as convincing as a technician who just walked the property.
The customer has seen the technician's truck, met them in person, and watched them work. They trust that person more than any message from the office. Use that.
Step One: Walk Them Through What You Found
Start with what the technician saw, not with the price. Keep it short and specific:
- “Your ants were coming in along the back slab where the patio meets the house.”
- “There is a gap under the garage door seal where spiders are getting in.”
- “Your mulch is right up against the siding, which gives insects cover all the way to the wall.”
Before-and-after photos from the tech app help here. Showing the customer a photo of the entry point you treated makes the work real in a way words do not.
Step Two: Explain What Happens Without a Plan
Then explain plainly why today's visit will not last forever. Exterior treatments break down with sun and rain. New pests arrive from outside every season. The customer can either call again when the problem comes back or let you keep it from coming back. Avoid scare tactics. The honest version is convincing enough.
Step Three: Make the Offer
Keep the offer simple. One plan, one price, a clear schedule:
“Our quarterly plan is what we recommend for a home like yours. We come out every three months, treat the outside of the house, and come inside if you need us. It's $125 a visit, charged to your card after each service. If anything shows up between visits, we come back at no charge.”
The price is an example; use your own. Because PestBossPro measures the home's square feet and perimeter from the satellite map, the technician or the office can have the plan price ready before the visit even starts. Pricing is covered in Pricing Quarterly Pest Plans Off Square Feet and Perimeter.
Handling Common Questions
Technicians hear the same few questions. Have a short answer ready for each:
- “Is there a contract?” Say what your policy is. Many companies run plans with no long-term contract, which is an easy yes for the customer.
- “Do I have to be home?” For exterior service, usually not. Customers can get a text the night before and when the technician arrives.
- “Is it safe for my kids and pets?” Explain what you use in general terms and that they will get an email after each visit telling them how long to keep kids and pets off treated areas.
- “Can I think about it?” Of course. Tell them the office will send the estimate so they can approve it online.
Step Four: Close With the Card
When the customer says yes, finish it before leaving. Have them fill out the sign-up form with their card captured, on their phone or the technician's. The sign-up lands in Form Responses, the office converts it into a client with one click, and the plan goes on the address. The first quarterly visit will come due on its own.
Getting the card at sign-up matters. A plan customer without a card on file is a plan customer the office has to chase four times a year. The sign-up form is covered in The Pest Plan Sign-Up Form: Getting the Card Captured Before You Leave.
Make It Routine
The single biggest improvement most companies can make is to have every technician make the offer on every initial service. Not just the confident ones, not just when the customer seems interested. Every time. Tag initials that did not sign up so the office can follow up, and look at the numbers each month by technician so you can see who needs help with the conversation.
A short ride-along is the best training. Let a new technician watch an experienced one make the offer a few times, then let them try it with someone beside them. For the rest of how plans run once signed, go back to the recurring pest control software overview.
